Mucilaginous seed
Plantago ovata
Psyllium is known for its mucilaginous properties and, when the seeds are soaked in water, they increase 8 to 14 times their original size. This gelatinous mass promotes peristalsis, hydration of the faeces, provides a laxative strain, relieves chronic constipation and produces soft stools: as it lubricates, it softens and increases faecal volume and viscosity. It can also relieve irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, mucous colitis, cystitis, gastrointestinal ulcers and diarrhoea.
